In order to become a licensed esthetician, most states require that you attend esthetics school (sometimes called cosmetology school) and pass a licensing exam. Once you do this, you will be on the road to a fun and lucrative career. You will be able to find work as a hair stylist, at a spa giving skin treatments, or as a lash tech. Esthetics school involves a lot of hard work, but it is worth it. Here are three tips for succeeding at esthetics school:

Get as Much Practice as Possible

Beauty services are detail-oriented and meticulous. Clients will expect you to provide quality work while also being quick. Getting to that point requires extensive practice. Eventually, you will get better at each skill you are learning and will gain muscle memory.

While your esthetics school will offer many opportunities for practicing on mannequins or live models, it's smart to get in extra practice whenever you can. Carve out time at night or on weekends to strengthen the skills you're learning in class.

Be Prepared to Study a Lot

While the practical side of performing beauty services is important, you will also need to pass a rigorous written exam given by your state board. It's important that you make time for both practice and study, even if the practical side of school seems more fun.

In addition to the textbooks and resources provided by your esthetics school, you will also be able to find online test prep materials and practice tests for your state. Ask one of your classmates to be your study buddy, make or purchase a set of flashcards, and take turns quizzing each other.

Look for an Internship at a Salon

If your schedule allows it, a great way to complement and build on what you are learning in your esthetics school classes is to apply for a salon or spa internship. This should happen later in your schooling, when you have a solid understanding of how to perform various beauty treatments, but need more real-world practice.

Many salons offer services from interns at a discounted rate. The client knows that you are just learning and may take a little longer to complete their service. You will have a supervisor checking your work and providing you with pointers for improvement.

Following these tips and studying hard for your licensing exam will pay off with a successful career as an esthetician. For more information about esthetics school, contact a school like Mitsu Sato Hair Academy.
