Hairstyle Topics To Consider If You're An Athlete
There are lots of topics to consider before you choose a new hairstyle and visit your local barber. For example, if you've recently graduated from college and are joining the workforce in a professional field, it may be time to choose a hairstyle that is a little more refined. If you're an athlete, it's also a good idea to consider the relationship between your hair and the sport that you play. While different men favor different looks, it's a good idea to consider the following topics to ensure that whatever new hairstyle you choose will suit your sport of choice.
Risk Of Pulling
You may love the look and feel of long hair, but long hair isn't a good match for certain sports. One of the big concerns that you can face is the risk of someone pulling your hair, perhaps even inadvertently. For example, if you play football and are a ball carrier, an opponent could grab you by the hair. Or, if you play a combat sport such as mixed martial arts, your hair could get trapped under your body and pulled when you're grappling with an opponent. Given these scenarios, a shorter hairstyle might be more suitable for you.
Appearance When Exposed
Some sports require you to wear helmets or caps, while other sports take place with your head exposed. Give some thought to how you want your hair to look when it's covered, but also when it's exposed. For example, if you're going to be interviewed between periods of a hockey game for the local TV broadcast, it's conventional to take off your helmet. Consider how your hair will look upon doing so. Shorter hairstyles can result in "helmet head" — a term that can describe an awkward look, similar to "bed head," caused by the helmet pressing onto your hair. Longer hair, in this scenario, may be preferable.
Styled Or Not Styled
If you play a sport in which you don't wear anything on your head, you'll want to evaluate whether you should style your hair before playing. Some soccer players style their hair with styling products, but the downside to doing so is that your sweat can cause the product to run into your eyes and be a nuisance. If you don't favor using a hair product during games, a short style such as a brush cut or a longer hairstyle may be better for you.
